Prince Industry Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s leading can-opener manufacturers based in Sanjo, Niigata, has been producing the Z Can Opener since the company was founded in 1969. Keeping its original, auspicious gourd-shaped design unchanged, this classic tool has been loved for more than 60 years, continuing from the company’s predecessor to the present day.

Rebranding by “Mura no Kajiya”
Mura no Kajiya has rebranded the Z Can Opener, expanding its colour lineup from the original two colors while preserving the traditional shape. A new retro-style package was also introduced to highlight the product’s long history.

In 2025, three new colours—gold, silver, and copper—were added, inspired by the popular forged Ellipse Stakes, known for their metallic finishes.

Despite its compact size, the opener also includes a bottle opener, offering two functions in one.

Compared to pull-tab cans, which typically have a shelf life of about 1.5 years, cans that require a can opener can last around 3 years. These make excellent emergency supplies, and keeping a Z Can Opener in your home, outdoor kit.

The gourd-shaped design is traditionally considered lucky and is often chosen as a wedding favor symbolizing “opening happiness.”
