About the Species
The red-backed fairywren is Australia’s smallest fairywren and the only one whose plumage contains no blue. During the breeding season, the male is easy to recognise by his black plumage and vivid red back. When courting, the male may raise the red feathers on his back in front of the female, who is brown and more discreetly coloured. The species lives in northern and eastern Australia, often in tropical and subtropical grasslands with shrubs for cover. There, it moves quickly through grass and low vegetation to find small insects.
