Press Release from Karen Dawn Curtis
Oxide-coloured functional art with rich colours reminiscent of rugged Wales.
Karen Dawn Curtis is ceramic artist who has rediscovered throwing and become struck by the unique appeal of ceramics as functional art. Karen is based in Cardiff and is currently making her different collections. Karen is exhibiting at British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate from 8-10th April 2018, for the first time, to widen her customer basis.
Inspired by the South Wales as a place where rugged nature has been lived in but not lost, Karen creates her collections to explore the point where beauty and practical purpose meet. Karen Dawn Curtis has always been fascinated by the naked surface of clay. Karen adds oxides to the clay body to create the exterior colours without having to mask the natural texture of the material. The interior surfaces of the functional pieces are glazed to ensure that they are food safe. In developing these glazes Karen has discovered a rich palette of colours which are reminiscent of Wales itself.
Karen Dawn Curtis states: “It is my hope that this work is art which will be touched, used and treasured, allowing the user a moment to reflect on the beauty of nature, while they revive themselves with a drink or meal.”
