NOTTENE Hand:Drawn Wallpaper and Fabric at TOP DRAWER

August 2019 Our studio is called Nottene, pronounced [nuh-ten-uh], and we are a Philadelphia-based print and pattern design studio that produces our own line of hand-drawn and screen printed wallpaper and dye printed fabric. The new wallpaper and fabric collection for 2019 is a continuation of our interest in colonial textiles and stencils. Our work comes from a practice of storytelling through drawing, and visualizes our interest in finding patterns in the small details of everyday life. Our combination of careful research, hand-drawn patterns, and textured brush strokes result in a wallpaper that brings a sense of intimacy to a space.
We are dedicated to investigations of decorative objects and the “stuff” people collect. Our studio has researched trash and recycled objects through a RAIR residency in Philadelphia in 2017, partnered with civil engineers at the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute in Baltimore in 2018, and is excited to participate in a Maker-Creator fellowship at the Winterthur Museum in 2019.
We are husband and wife team Kimberly Ellen Hall & Justin Hardison. Kim earned her degree in textiles from Central St. Martins in London, while Justin is a self taught printmaker with a background in client relations, project management and sound design. Between them they have drawn or designed for companies like Chronicle Books, Coach, Hussein Chalayan, Anthropologie, Brooklyn Industries, and Crate & Barrel. Kim’s first illustrated book (about food!) will be coming out with Abrams in fall 2019.
Two new colorful handmade wallpapers are launching this season along with a complimentary set of nine fabric designs, that relate to our entire line. The wallpaper are all class A fire-rated and are suitable for commercial use in light traffic and decorative areas. Our fabrics are digitally printed with fiber reactive dyes that give a soft hand, good crock and wash fastness. These are a 55% linen, 45% cotton blend from Belgium. Printing capabilities can handle small and large orders. We offer a base palette of ink & paper colors that work harmoniously together in simple combinations that span the vivid to the restrained.
