When Sarwa capital decided to make the move
and establish their headquarter in down town
Cairo, they have appointed Ebony & Ivory to
work on the design / refurbishment of the
interiors of the building to turn it into a modern
office space that accommodates their operation,
while preserving and respecting the historical
nature of the building.Driven by this charismatic initiative
by Sarwa Capital, Ebony & Ivory,
being an experienced design house
for 20 years, embraced the mission
and started working on this old-time
beauty to turn it into an open-space
office environment, knowing that it
was built in 1895 with bearing walls,
making it quite a challenge to transform.
Special studies were done via
Al-Ismaelia real-estate’s structural
consultant to be able to create openings
in the walls while making the
necessary reinforcements. The building is located at the corner of Mahmoud
Bassiouny St. and Champollion St. in the heart of
downtown Cairo, with thick stone walls and
wooden slabs, no reinforced concrete content.
After the space has been studied in terms of
zoning and circulation to accommodate Sarwa
Capital’s operational requirements the mission
was to bring back the architectural details
relevant to the era to which the building belongs.
In order to do that Ebony & Ivory’s design team
studied the motifs and renderings of the late
1800s and started working out the details. The planning process took almost one year, with
coordination between all parties to kick start work
on site, MAS contractors were chosen for the
implementation of the project. In order to achieve
the target all parties had to work really hard and
close to plan for all infrastructural facilities
without offending the architecture. Installing
air-conditioning systems, fire alarm and fire fighting
networks in a way that is as inconspicuous as
possible, while restoring all the details that
existed in the building to bring it back to life. The project is still in the making, it is
expected to reach completion by the
end of May 2018. The building will
mark the first modern office to be
located in Downtown Cairo, quite an
untraditional move from Sarwa Capital,
knowing that most companies
that size would probably move into
either New Cairo or a typical office
park in the Sixth of October City. The project is a collaborative work between Ebony & Ivory,
Al-Ismaelia and MAS contracting all serving Sarwa Capital
to make the full transformation hoping that this would inspire
other companies to make similar moves and eventually transform
downtown into the main business / commercial hub in
Cairo.
