This recent work is derived from the kind of drawings which I was doing with the Rambert Dance Company from 1975 -1982. The culmination of this work was shown in the Lyttelton foyer of the National Theatre London in an exhibition called ‘7 Years of Ballet Rambert’ in 1983.
The technique/materials employed at that time were Rotoring pen and ink creating a slow painstakingly crafted line, which was popular with the dancers because it somehow conveyed their movement that more conventional narrative drawing could not express.
These Greek drawings created on the IPad are more archetypal in nature; reflecting both modern and Ancient Greek culture. They reference the fecundity of Minoan Bird-women libation pottery found in Akrotiri on the island of Santorini and Cycladic sculpture found in graves on the Cycladic islands slightly further to the north.
The screen images can be created with a very gestural technique allowing the line to flow easily between thick and thin. Many are based on quotes from the author George Crane, who lives on Paros where these drawings were created. They are, in a very real sense, graphic expressions of my own handwriting, and provide ‘fast food’ for more developed work in painting and sculpture.
