Niwaki

Founded by Jake and Keiko Hobson, Niwaki imports and sells fine  garden tools, kitchen knives and woodworking tools from Japan. We work closely with manufacturers in Japan, combining the best in traditional Japanese design and craftsmanship, with a contemporary outlook and approach.

Niwaki means garden tree. Not very exciting, but it implies far more than that. Japanese gardens are landscapes, microcosms of nature, and the trees are all shaped to fit into those landscapes - there’s an awful lot of artistry and cultural baggage in there too.

Niwaki supply tools to professional gardeners at prestigious gardens around the worlds, notably National Trust, RHS properties in the UK and private estates such as Chatsworth. We wholesale to the RHS, Royal Botanic Gardens, Conran Shop, John Lewis and countless other independent garden, design and lifestyle centres.

Niwaki benefits from a strong understanding and experience of traditional Japanese crafts, coupled with a practical passion for working in the garden and the outdoors. We use every tool ourselves, and care deeply not only about its performance but also its provenance. We have friends and partners in Japan, UK, Europe, and the US - professional gardeners, landscapers and garden designers, who all inspire us on to greater things. Sometimes an outsider has a unique perspective on a situation - able to see a subject in a different way, and to appreciate it better.

Although all of our tools and accessories are made in Japan, they work just as well in western gardens, and on a whole range of plants. Tripod ladders, it turns out, are just as useful for hedge trimming as they are for pine pruning; and of course topiary clippers work just as well on box topiary as they do on azalea karikomi.

You don’t need to grow bonsai to enjoy these tools.
